The first East Asian Youth Games in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia 2023

The first East Asian Youth Games were held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia from August 16th to 23rd, with over 1500 athletes from 9 countries or regions participating, including China, Guam, Hong Kong, China, Japan, Macau, China, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea and Chinese Taipei. A total of 11 sports were contested in the games, including Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, E-sports, Football, Judo, Table tennis, Taekwondo, Volleyball and Wrestling.

The East Asian Youth Games (EAYG) is a continental multi-sport event organised by the East Asian Olympic Committee (EAOC) and held every four years since 2023 among athletes from East Asian countries and territories of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), as well as the Pacific island of Guam, which is a member of the Oceania National Olympic Committees. Ulaanbaatar is the city in the world to host the East Asian Youth Games for the first time.

The mission of the East Asian Youth Games is to promote the development of sports, culture, education, and the spirit of fair play in sports competitions among young people in East Asia and build up the physical fitness of young generation in the region. Discover the young talented players in East Asia and strengthen the relationships between them and inspire them to participate in the Olympic Games in 2028 and 2032. While promoting the Host city, Mongolian history, tradition, culture, and art will be introduced and advertised to the participating players and officials during the event.

Ulaanbaatar 2023 proudly presents its official mascots, the lovable duo of Haki and Inga. Based on mythical creatures that hold deep significance in Asian culture, these mascots were chosen to embody the spirit and heritage of Mongolia. Haki, also known as the Khangardi or Garuda, represents the courage, bravery, and intelligence of the people of Ulaanbaatar, making it the perfect symbol for the city. Meanwhile, Inga, the Galbingaa or Kinnara, is an ancient Mongolian winged bird-human that played a pivotal role in the creation of the world, making it a powerful symbol of the nation’s rich history and mythology.
